After their parents' deaths, Ermena and Flodvard are raised by a ruthless Gypsy who forces them to perform dangerous tightrope acts for money. The children live in fear of their guardian, until they meet a kindly young Count who suspects their true origins and vows to protect them. The story follows the siblings' desperate flight from their tormentor and their journey toward freedom. Along the way, they encounter both danger and compassion, as they search for a place where they can finally belong. This book movingly captures the resilience and vulnerability of children, and the power of hope in the face of adversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A narrow, winding road led from the city gate down into the plain, and ended, finally, in a thick wood, whose high trees already threw long shadows, for it was late in the afternoon; the sun sank lower and lower, and gilded with its rays the western horizon.
Upon the path which led from the forest into the city, appeared a strange little band of people, who required no second glance to discover they were not natives of Germany, indeed, not of Europe, but that their home must be in some far distant land.
