These games have been preserved by oral tradition for centuries, forming a unique aspect of children's folklore. The author highlights the educational value of these games, emphasizing not only their entertainment value but their potential to develop mental and physical skills, teach discipline, and inculcate good manners. By exploring the historical and cultural context of these games, the author demonstrates their broader significance. The author discusses the thematic depth of these games, exploring the ways in which they reflect aspects of human nature. Concepts of courtship, marriage, and domestic life; the changing seasons; themes of work and play; and issues of social class and gender are all represented in these games, providing a rich tapestry of cultural insights. Children's singing games, as this book reveals, are not simply a collection of songs and activities but a complex and multifaceted reflection of human experience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

These singing games have been preserved by oral tradition over such a long period of time that they must contain something which is peculiarly attractive to children. Their value has not, perhaps, always been appreciated by adults, although of recent years many educationists have testified to the worth of the singing game as a factor in the education of the young. Under the guise of amusement, of a kind that children dearly love, these games bring into play many of those mental and physical activities which it is the especial function of education to develop. They stimulate the dramatic and mimetic faculties, feed the imagination, exercise the voice and limbs, teach discipline and restraint, and inculcate lessons in courtesy and good manners.
