A skill themes approach trains teachers to help children develop their motor skills with developmentally appropriate activities as opposed to games and "just for fun" activities. The chapters in Part I introduce students to the concept of teaching physical education and teaching children in physical education. Future teachers learn how to teach children skills that are appropriate to their development skill level (not grade level).
Coverage of basic teaching skills. Part II, "Teaching Skills," covers important topics like planning, organizing, assessing and evaluating. A strong background in educationally sound theory and information on applying these theories will make the students who read Children Moving better teachers. An emphasis on reflective teaching introduces students to the concept of adjusting teaching styles to students' needs.
Examples of classroom conversations. The scripted format in the skill theme chapters (Part IV) gives new teachers concrete examples of real conversations in the classroom/gymnasium.
