‘In this beautiful and original book, Clara Schulmann has assembled a dazzling ‘cacophony’, varying in rhythm, rapidity, hesitation and flow, from a wide range of fascinating and unexpected sources. Chicanes captures the sounds of women’s emotions; the perfectly expressed, the overflow of excess and the lapse into silence. Schulmann’s own voice is a vivid presence, inspiring readers, as they discover the words of other women who enliven her pages, to summon up their own treasured voices.’ - Laura Mulvey
Chicanes heralds a new French feminism through a meticulously orchestrated chorus of the wildest female voices, from figures in the history of feminist writing to the stranger on the street, blurring the boundaries between body and art; personal and political. A poly-translation, by eight female translators, from established to emerging, Chicanes brings the individual voice of each translator into subtle relief. As she tries to collect them for an essay she is planning to write, other women’s words begin interfering in Clara Schulmann’s life ― heard on the radio, in podcasts, songs, and films; words of novelists, feminist intellectuals, friends or strangers overheard in the street. They invade her psyche, reshaping the essay that she once had in mind into a picaresque adventure which investigates the fault lines around women’s voices: and in particular those moments of overflow and excess where wayward words take seed.'
‘The essay addresses the matters of affect and unease, inviting reflection on the voice as a tool for the emancipation of the body. Through Clara Schulmann’s sensibility, the words of women who speak up start disrupting the tedium of routine and wreak havoc.’ – Pauline Thoër, ‘Clara Schulmann, Zizanies’, in Critique d’art
‘[Zizanies] reads like a thriller (...) an idiosyncratic collage, born of the critical examination of the things she both reads and hears. In just over 200 pages, Schulmann spans a vast imaginary community; bringing together innumerable feminist figures – the from well-known to the unrecorded, to the unexpected.’ – The Art Newspaper
‘A veritable mille-feuille of moods, allusions and digressions.’ – Julien Bécourt, Switch
‘Immersive and curious in the best possible way.’ ― Volume
‘Women’s voices, their capacity to speak out and the register of their effects on the world is at the core of feminism. (Fun fact gleaned from the book: since gaining the vote in 1944, women’s voices in France have deepened.) - Fiona O’Connor, The Morning Star

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
