Item description from seller

Five Great Depression-era Chicago Symphony Orchestra programs, 1931-1932, Forty-First Season. Features include exceptionally detailed notes of program music, concert schedules, many period ads (Steinway, Stradivarius, Lyon & Healy, Charles A. Stevens fashions in Chicago's loop, etc.), numerous photos of performers and much more. All concerts performed under the direction of celebrated conductor Frederick Stock, who led the orchestra for an astounding 37 years, spearheaded the CSO's first commercial audio recordings in 1916, captured a massive catalog of Romantic and classical works for labels like Columbia and RCA Victor, championed many contemporary composers, including Igor Stravinsky and Nikolai Myaskovsky, conducted the US premiere of Gustav Holst's The Planets (1920) and perhaps most notably conducted the world premiere of Florence Price's Symphony in E minor, an historic event that marked the first performance of a symphony written by an African-American woman. All programs with 32 numbered pages at 8 3/4" x 5 3/4". Tight, unmarked copies with light age toning. Odor free. An important historic collection gathered in the early, difficult years of the Great Depression. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request.
