Lord Chesterfield, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694 - 1773) wrote letters to his illegitimate son, Philip Stanhope, for thirty years. Letters to encourage worldly success in the 18th century. They were first published in 1774, under the title 'Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming A Man of the World and a Gentleman". This Volume of selected letters is 3 1/2" X 5 1/2" tall. Red flexible leather with gilt decorations and spine title. Top edge gilt (all still bright). Crown and foot of leather is gently chipped (see photos)and corners worn. An engraving of Chesterfield with tissue guard in place at front. A tight clean early twentieth century copy. A fabulous item. 155 pages. Protected in a mylar slip. Seller Inventory # 004642
