What if your weight struggle isn't about food — it's about who you think you are?
If you've spent years (decades?) cycling through diets, losing weight and regaining it, obsessing about food instead of enjoying it, here's what no diet book will tell you: the problem was never the food. At some point you started thinking of yourself as someone with a weight problem, who must always watch what they eat. That mindset and self-identity are keeping you stuck, not your willpower.
The Cherry Pie Paradox offers a radical and proven alternative. The author of this innovative process, Joy Imboden Overstreet MPH, quit studying diets and dieters. Instead she asked an entirely different question: how do naturally slim people think about food? What's their relationship with eating, hunger, pleasure, and their bodies?
And what would happen if you could inhabit that positive mindset instead of trying to follow yet another diet?
The answer, it turns out, can be transformational—changing not just how you eat, but how you see yourself. Joy pioneered this process in 1975 in her groundbreaking Thin Within workshops, decades before "intuitive eating" entered the mainstream conversation.
This is not another diet book. There are no calories to count, no foods to avoid, no meal plans to follow, and no shame for enjoying that slice of freshly baked cherry pie. Instead, Joy’s Eight SuperTools guide you through a genuine identity shift—from chronic dieter to natural, relaxed eater.
Inside you'll discover how to:
- Replace your inner critic with a curious, compassionate inner coach
- Uncover the hidden stories and beliefs that have kept you trapped in diet thinking
- Reconnect with your body's genuine hunger and fullness signals
- Rediscover the pleasure of eating foods you love—without overeating
- Shift your identity from "someone with a weight problem" to someone who simply eats
- Build a lasting, appreciative relationship with the body you live in
"I took Joy's original Thin Within workshops back in 1977. Her brilliance changed my life and was the beginning of developing my own program for breaking free from compulsive eating. Joy is a true original."
— Geneen Roth, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Women Food and God
"Joy's warmth, wisdom, humor and relatable experiences make her the perfect companion for this rewarding journey of befriending your body and the food that nourishes it."
— Chérie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., author of New York Times bestseller If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules
Who this book is for:
The woman who has tried everything and is exhausted. The midlife reader whose body is changing in ways that feel unfair. The chronic yo-yo dieter who suspects there must be a better way. Anyone who wants to stop thinking about food so much and start living more fully.
About Joy Imboden Overstreet, MPH:
Joy created the original Thin Within workshops in 1975, helping hundreds of participants break free from compulsive eating by reconnecting with their body's own wisdom. Recent findings in neuroscience and cognitive behavioral research now validate what she discovered empirically half a century ago. She holds a Master's in Public Health and has spent her career at the intersection of psychology, behavior change, and compassionate self-discovery.
Ready to stop dieting and start living? The companion workbook, The Cherry Pie Paradox Workbook: Step by Step to Diet Freedom, is available separately for readers who want structured writing prompts and exercises to deepen the process. It's essential if you buy this as an audiobook.
