Print on Demand. This book delves into the subject of acid deposition in the desert Southwest, a timely issue with far-reaching environmental implications. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of water and sediment samples collected from pothole ecosystems, capturing the current state of these fragile desert features. The data revealed elevated levels of trace elements, indicating long-range transport of atmospheric aerosols. The findings highlight the vulnerability of these ecosystems to external pollutants and emphasize the need for comprehensive monitoring and conservation efforts to preserve their pristine nature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

This non-fiction work examines pothole waters in the Colorado Plateau region, focusing on how these tiny, ephemeral pools reflect the mix of precipitation, dry deposition, and sediments. It outlines a 1988–1990 study that collected water and sediment samples from potholes in Arches National Park and nearby public lands, then expanded to sites near Lake Mead and Joshua Tree National Monument to assess potential pollution sources.
The book details how researchers measured temperature, pH, alkalinity, and a wide range of trace elements and ions. It describes the methods used to analyze core water chemistry, trace metals, and other constituents, offering a clear view of the steps scientists take to understand acid deposition effects in hostile desert environments.
- Learn how water and sediment samples are collected and preserved for accurate analysis
- See which chemical parameters indicate sensitivity to acid deposition in pothole ecosystems
- Understand how low alkalinity interacts with dissolved substances in ephemeral pools
- Get a sense of the field and lab techniques used in this environmental study
Ideal for readers of environmental science, ecology, and park research, this edition provides a practical window into desert water chemistry and biomonitoring in arid landscapes.
