About this Item
In French. 'Bibliotheque Portative Voyageurs'. A very rare five volume set published by Chez Fournier Freres in 1807. I didn't see any for sale on the Internet. The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City owns one set. You can see my set in the photographs provided. The volumes are quite small, 3 1/2 by 2 5/8 inches. The covers are a dark red leather with gilt borders on the front and back. The gilt lettering and design on the spines is still fairly bright. All the page edges were originally gilt. The middle and bottom page edges retain much of it. The gilt at the top edge of Tome Cinquieme is still present, though somewhat darkened. Oddly, the gilt at the top edge of Tome Quatrieme is half darkened gilt and half gone gilt. At the top edge of the first three volumes the gilt is entirely gone. Tome Premier: there is a tiny loss at the top edge of the spine (see 1st photo). The spine is slightly faded and has a little bit of rubbing. The book is square and straight and very solidly bound, no spaces or cracks. The pages are nicely tight. The book has a very appealing blue design on the inside covers and end papers. All are in excellent condition. The pages in the book are very clean. They don't have any foxing. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. I saw only a few edge tears, none reaching the print. I saw one larger tear off the middle edge of the 'Table Des Pieces' page which follows the last numbered page in the book. The tear does not touch the print. I also saw one tiny loss at the bottom edge of one page, again nowhere near the print. There are just a few creases, though one is on the title page and one is on page 1. No dogeared corners. No markings or attachments. Tome Second: I did a slow scroll. Again, no issues with binding, square and straight, very solidly bound, tight pages. Tight pages in very good condition. Again, very clean pages, no foxing, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book, no markings, no attachments, and very little by way of creasing. Also, I didn't see any tears in this volume. The covers look very good. As with the first volume, the spine shows a little bit of rubbing and a little wear at the top edge. You can see the covers of Tome Troisieme: they look very good. There is one spot on the spine and there is a little loss at the spine ends. There is a crack/space between the blank back of the blue front end paper and the Bibliotheque Portative Voyageurs page. It runs up from the bottom edge about three quarters of the way to the top. No page is loose. The front cover is not loose. However, as a result of this crack it does bow out about an inch. If another of the volumes is sitting on it, it flattens out. The pages in the book are akin to the other volumes, tight and very solidly bound. The Bibliotheque page has a very, very tiny loss at its top right-hand corner. A slow scroll through the pages again shows very clean pages. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. No markings, no foxing, no attachments. Only a few small creases, a tiny spot of wear at the top corner of the title page. The binding of the rear cover is without issue. Tome Quatrieme: very clean covers. No rubbing this time on the spine. There is some rub-through at the rear top corner, also a spot of the same on the bottom edge of the front. Absolutely no binding issues, no cracks/spaces, tight pages. I saw two pages (one the Bibliotheque page) with a small edge loss not near the print, also two pages with creases. Again, no names, no writing, no markings, no attachments. Tome Cinquieme: Mended tear near the top of the spine, tiny loss at the top of the spine, otherwise covers very good. No binding issues, tight pages. Very clean pages. No markings, no attachments, no names, no writing. I didn't see any tears, just a couple of corner creases. The blue inside covers and end papers are pretty much perfect in all the volumes. Very well-preserved set. Seller Inventory # 001602
