Print on Demand. This book delves into the character and evolution of the San Joaquin Valley groundwater flow system. The San Joaquin Valley is home to the largest contiguous aquifer system in the United States, a system that supplies water to millions of people and irrigates millions of acres of farmland. The author's meticulous research unveils the geological processes that shaped this system and its response to human-induced changes. From the Corcoran Clay Member to the Sierran sands, the book unravels the complex interactions between groundwater flow, land subsidence, and agricultural development. Through an in-depth analysis of the flow system's evolution, the book highlights the critical role of understanding these intricate relationships for sustainable water management and the preservation of this vital resource. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

This book explains how the western San Joaquin Valley’s groundwater divides into an upper semiconfined zone and a lower confined zone, shaped by ancient clay layers and layered deposits. It traces how irrigation, pumping, and surface water changes have transformed where and how water moves, storage, and is used today.
Readers will learn how different rock and soil layers—Coast Range alluvium, Sierran sands, and flood-basin deposits—affect water flow, storage, and quality. The text also shows how past farming growth created dramatic shifts in water levels, land subsidence, and the need for new irrigation strategies.
- How the Corcoran Clay Member divides the flow system and why that matters for water pressure and movement
- Differences between the Coast Range and Sierran deposits and their impact on permeability
- How agricultural practices and water imports shifted recharge and discharge over time
- Historical maps and observations that document changes in water table and subsidence
Ideal for readers seeking a grounded, data-driven view of groundwater dynamics in a major agricultural region.
