Print on Demand. This book explores the role of ‘character’ as the guiding force in all human affairs and discusses the real impact it wields in practical life and throughout literature. The author delves deep into the idea that influential power stems from forceful, persistent, and calculable individuals who grow into colossal stature through assimilation of material or spiritual realities. It's argued that the quality of a person’s character can be deduced through the quality of their output, which is, therefore, stamped with their imperfections, revealing a person in their essential personality. The author states that the contemplation of the facts presented can seem daunting at first, as they reveal daunting challenges, but it is also the source of hope born of activity and intelligence. This book’s insights on character highlight that, by understanding and embodying things in person, a person’s character becomes as comprehensive as their experience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Essays
The essays in the present volume were writ ten at various times, and without any view to their connected publication; but they all more or less illustrate one idea oi' the nature, growth, and influence of character. Lvith the exception of those on Thackeray, Hawthorne, and Agassiz, they were all originally delivered as lectures or addresses, and the style doubtless exhibits that perpetual scepticism as to the patience of au diences which torments the lecturer during the brief hour in which he attempts to hold their attention. The first six of the essays, with the exception of that on Intellectual Character, were published in Harper's Magazine, between July and November, 1857, and the paper on Agassiz was also contributed to that periodical. As most.
