255 pages. Contemporary half calf, marbled paper boards, olive green endpapers, spine thin at edge and strengthened, calf rubbed at corners and edges of spine area. Contents have some mild spotting at prelims and title page. Contents remain Very Good. Small octavo. 1870. *** PLEASE NOTE: This copy was NEVER published. The only copy you will ever see was dated 1882 and modern re-prints are from this edition. The book here was withdrawn from sale before distribution on the wishes of the author. The information contained here was probably for the later edition revised and changed or updated for the 1882 edition. This will be more indiscreet about church leaders and people than the later published work. I have no idea what passages or chapters were changed. I just know there was a radical reason why the author was insistent the book was not to be published. THIS book came to us via the son or grandson of the publisher Edmund Sydney Williams of Williams & Norgate. Mr Geoffrey Williams who died in about 1987-8 in Norfolk UK, we purchased this directly a few years before his death as an old man. The publishers specialised in Science Philosophy and Theology mainly and were in existence until the early 20th century. There is a contemporary inscription from his father stating "This book was never published-suppressed by the author--" Underneath this it states Published in 1887 with alterations" (This I believe to be incorrect as the 1st edition of the later work was dated 1882 according to research online. Was this a mistaken date, or is this inscription incorrect? This copy written anonymously and not attributed to any author is clearly dated 1870 on the title page, later copies show the author as the Independent Minister and writer of theology Henry Julius Martyn. Store description
We are a small, single-owner business. We have been operating on and off since 1977 and our stock is varied, leaning towards antiquarian and 19th century with the addition of original aquatint and lithographic, or woodcut engravings. Also maps and Ephemera - in fact, anything interesting on paper really. We have in stock every item we list. We do not use stock photographs, but photograph each item individually. We very rarely use "fine" or "mint" as a description, mainly due to the age and the fact that 99.9% of what we sell has been pre-owned and therefor Fine would not be a term for a book we sell despite its fine-like appearance. We always take items back unreservedly if not in the condition as described. We always try to describe fully.…
