Print on Demand. This book conducts an in-depth survey of chaplaincy programs employed by the armed forces of various nations across the globe. The author presents a diverse array of structures and traditions, some of which are of recent origin while others trace their roots through centuries. Each program, naturally, is reflective of the larger culture to which it belongs and is shaped by the histories of the unique nations that sponsor them. The religious or moral welfare of military personnel is a matter of paramount importance across these diverse cultures. There is an obvious appreciation that the inherent nature of military life can present unique challenges and that chaplains can serve to provide guidance and support. This book offers readers a comparative view of what chaplaincy programs look like in different countries and is a valuable resource for both military professionals and religious leaders alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Every significant chaplaincy contributes to the climate in which it functions, but it, in turn, is influenced by powerful forces and traditions at work in the military and in society at large. The gen eral history of religion and the role of the military in a given society have strong bearing on chaplaincy arrangements. They often de termine the detailed answer to questions regarding chaplains' uni form or garb, rank, pay, equipment, authority, training, duties, and supervision. This is equally true for the United States where such factors as religious pluralism and great sensitivity to church-state relationships must be considered if the chaplaincy is to be accepted and effective.
Our purpose in making these studies available is to attempt an understanding of the rationale, philosophy and tradition reflected in each effort to provide this kind of ministry. The detailed arrange ments are both interesting and significant. In doing this we also hope to provide a background against which to see our own United States chaplaincy programs in clearer perspective.
