Item description from seller

Title: Chaplain of the Constantinian Order: A Rare 18th-Century Engraving Description: This hand-colored engraving depicts a "Capellan oder Priester des Gehorsams vom Constantiner-Orden" (Chaplain or Priest of the Obedience of the Constantinian Order). The figure is rendered in full profile, adorned in a flowing light blue mantle with a bold red cross, a hallmark of the Constantinian Order. His clerical attire includes a traditional black cassock, emphasizing the religious nature of the role, while the distinctive hat adds a touch of ecclesiastical elegance. The chaplain's posture reflects devotion and dignity, a perfect representation of his esteemed position within the order. The engraving originates from Christian Friedrich Schwan's celebrated series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben," published in Mannheim between 1779 and 1791. This work is renowned for its vivid depictions of both spiritual and secular orders, offering a glimpse into the ceremonial regalia and history of these institutions. Each image in the series is accompanied by historical notes, making this a valuable artifact for collectors and historians. Condition: Good condition. The colors remain vibrant, with some foxing and age-related spotting or soiling on the margins due to handling. The paper is stable with no tears or significant creases. Frame Tip: Pair this engraving with a gold or bronze frame to enhance its historical feel. A neutral or pale blue mat board would complement the mantle's color, bringing out the subtle details of the artwork. This engraving is not only an artistic treasure but also a historical document that would make a remarkable addition to any collection of religious, historical, or chivalric artifacts. Its rarity and connection to Schwan's masterpiece ensure its timeless appeal.
