A seventy-four volume set of the Chamber's Journal in original paper wraps. An incomplete run from the fourth series which ran between 1864 and 1884. Volumes include: Complete Run from XXVII to XXXVIII. Run from: XLI to LXXXIX with volumes XLV, XLXIX, LI, LII, LIII, LIV LV, LXIII, LXV, LXXVIII, LXXXI, LXXXII, LXXXIII, LXXXIV Missing. Complete Run from XC to CVIII with CIV and CV missing Run from CXXII to CXLIV with CXXXV-CXLI and CXLII missing Chambers's Edinburgh Journal was a weekly 16-page magazine started by William Chambers in 1832. The first edition was dated 4 February 1832, and priced at one penny. Topics included history, religion, language, and science. William was soon joined as joint editor by his brother Robert who wrote many of the articles for the early issues, and within a few years the journal had a circulation of 84,000. In 1854 the title was changed to Chambers's Journal of Popular Literature, Science, and Arts, and changed again to Chambers's Journal at the end of 1897. The journal was produced in Edinburgh until the late 1850s, by which time the author James Payn had taken over as editor, and production was moved to London. The journal continued to be published until 1956. James Payn's role as editor and contributor helped shape and define the trajectory of Chamber's Journal as a magazine popular for serialised fiction. The publication of Payn's Lost Sir Massingberd in 1864, the beginning of the fourth series, secured a larger market for the Journal and raised the circulation by an estimated 20,000. Chamber's Journal has been noted for discovering and publishing new talent and noted contributions include George Meredith's first poem, Thomas Hardy's first article and Arthur Conan Doyle's first short story. In original paper wraps. Externally, generally sound with warping to wraps due to dampstaining. Chipping to all volumes heavier in places, with wear to spines and sunning to wraps. Many volumes dogeared with handling marks and ownership signatures to front wrap. Joints generally firm although hinges tender and hinges to volumes XXXVI, L, LXV, XCIV, CVIII, CXXX and XCLII with rear hinges failed. Volumes LXXIX, LXXX, XCVIII, and XCIC with one or both wraps detached but present. Rear wrap to XCIX missing. Heavier wear to volumes XXXVI, XCI, CXXV and CXLI with some loss to wraps. Volume CXXV heavily soiled. Internally, binding generally strained to all volumes. Binding to volume LXXIX failed with textblock split. Pages generally bright with spotting and handling marks throughout. Warping to pages as with external. Loss internally to volume XXXVII although all other volumes appear complete. Good Only.
