Synopsis:

When Ann was fourteen, she awoke after a terrible explosion to find herself in a makeshift hospital in the waning months of the Civil War. Her house is no longer standing, her mother is dead and a young doctor has amputated her arm to save her life. Homeless and orphaned, Ann decides that her only option is to travel west. While following the Santa Fe Trail, she joins up with a troupe of orphaned children. Together, they fight the hardships of the wild frontier: abominable weather, savage Indians and starvation. In Kansas, she meets, and much to his chagrin, falls in love with Chalk. From the moment Chalk and Ann see each other, they know that their lives will be forever intertwined.

Review: "Full of the sort of Old West derring-do that made A.B. Guthrie's "The Big Sky" so enthralling."-"Kirkus Reviews"
