Does your child dream bigger than the world around them seems to allow?
If you have a curious kid who wishes they could fly, who feels frustrated when things don't happen fast enough, or who's convinced that "better" must be somewhere far away — you know how hard it is to help them see that wonder doesn't require going anywhere at all. Some kids ache for the unknown before they even have the words for it. This book was written for exactly that kind of child.
Chad and the Birds is the first adventure in the Chad the Explorer picture book series, a warm, beautifully illustrated story for kids ages 3-7 about slowing down, noticing, and finding magic exactly where you already are.
Chad the fox lies in a meadow painted gold and green, watching the sky become a busy highway of wings. "If I could fly," he whispers to his map, "I could see everything at once." One by one, he asks the birds what the world looks like from up there. A swallow darts past, too busy hunting bugs to stop. A robin has nowhere to perch and talk. Each bird is kind, but none of them have time for a small fox with a big question. Chad's ears droop. He begins to wonder if he was only ever meant for the dusty paths, never the golden clouds.
Then, tucked beneath the roots of an old willow tree, Chad meets a new friend — a gentle hedgehog who shows him something he never expected. Chad doesn't find the answer in the sky at all. He finds it in a stone, smooth and blue as summer, resting quietly in the roots where it had been all along. The extraordinary things he'd been chasing above the clouds were on the ground the whole time, waiting for someone who knew how to look.
Every book in the Chad the Explorer series is built around the same comforting pattern children fall in love with: a cozy new setting, a gentle animal friend who teaches Chad something important, a small emotional lesson wrapped in a moment of courage or kindness, and a little treasure Chad carries home. Chad and the Birds is where that collection begins.
What kids take from this story:
- That wonder doesn't have to be chased — it can be found
- That someone else's "too busy" isn't a reflection of their own worth
- That patience and noticing are their own kind of adventure
- A gentle, non-scary introduction to nature, friendship, and self-acceptance
- That feeling small doesn't mean you're in the wrong place
Every page is hand-painted in soft, golden woodland tones, with a calm, unhurried pace that never feels rushed or preachy. There are no monsters, no danger, and no scary surprises — just a fox, a meadow, and a lesson gentle enough for the quietest part of the day. This is meant to be read slowly, out loud, with plenty of room to point at the acorns and pebbles tucked into every scene.
Parents come back to this one because it's genuinely calming enough for the last book before lights-out, and it quietly opens the door to conversations about patience and comparison.
Perfect for bedtime reading, quiet afternoons, classroom story time, birthday and holiday gifts, and any child who needs reminding that the magic they're looking for might already be right where they are.
A note on the book itself: this is a full-length picture book with detailed, consistent illustrations on every page, sized comfortably for read-aloud sessions. It holds up to repeat reading the way the best bedtime books do — the kind a child asks for again the next night, and the one after that.
This is book one of a series built to grow alongside your child. Future adventures will follow Chad to new corners of his world, each with its own animal friend and its own small treasure to add to his collection — start the adventure with Chad today.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
