GANG WARFARE, THE GREAT DEPRESSION, AND THE BIGGEST PARTY THE WORLD HAD EVER SEEN...
Welcome to Chicago in 1933. The world’s fair, known as A Century of Progress, was in full swing and the Robertsons, “an average American family,” was in the Windy City to see it. Mrs. Robertson made careful notes of the high points and major attractions to help guide you, the fair visitor, through the chaos and crowds along Lake Michigan.
Cleverly hidden among, above, and around Mrs. Robertson’s travelogue are advertisements for pharmaceuticals from Dr. Miles Laboratories, makers of Alka-Seltzer (to “counteract Hyper-acidity” and relieve “Muscular, Neuralgic, Sciatic, Rheumatic, and Periodic Pains”), Aspir-Mint, Cactus Compound (“considered much more effective than dried cactus”), Anti-Pain Pills, Little Pills (to “move the bowels with little griping”), Laxative Tablets, and Nervine (“for Sleeplessness, as well as for Restlessness, Irritability, Nervous Headache, Nervous Indigestion, and other disorders caused by Over-Taxed Nerves”). This book isn’t just a tour of the world’s fair; it’s a deep dive into Grandma’s medicine chest!
Originally published in 1933 by Dr. Miles Laboratories, A Century of Progress was produced on highly acidic paper that, in the 21st century, is rapidly crumbling into dust. We have carefully scanned a rare surviving copy so that the Robertson’s visit to the world’s fair (and their adventures with Depression-era pharmaceuticals) may be preserved for future generations to experience with wonder and awe. Open the cover and take a step back to a simpler time; but if you take a laxative before visiting the fair, please make sure you know where the restrooms are.
