Print on Demand. This book traces intellectual evolution over the past century, starting with the French Revolution and its pivotal influence on scientific, philosophical, and artistic thought. The author argues that at its core is the idea of 'intellectual independence'—the power of man to think for himself and question dogma. The book charts the rejection of religious and political orthodoxy, leading to a new era of Enlightenment, with writers such as Voltaire and Rousseau championing reason, and the Encyclopedists calling for scientific inquiry and social amelioration. The influence of scientists like Newton and Herschel in introducing the concept of universal physical laws, along with the discovery of the unity of substance through spectroscopy, is also discussed. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. - General Philosophy
With the exception of the last three chapters, the contents of this volume appeared originally in 'the Edinburgh Evening N ews.' The interest which the articles created when they appeared in that newspaper leads me to believe that they will be found of considerable value in their per manent form. The chapter on Socialism has already appeared in the form of a pamphlet, which was published under the auspices of the Young Scots Society.
I have to thank the directors of 'the Edin burgh Evening News,' Limited, for their per mission to republish these articles.
