Eleanor Vale has spent most of her life measuring people.
Shoulders. Sleeves. Waists. Hems. The small, exact distances that allow a piece of fabric to belong to one body and no other.
Then she notices something she cannot explain.
Some of her clients are getting smaller.
Not enough for anyone else to notice. A fraction of an inch here, another there. But Eleanor keeps records, and records do not forget.
Soon, neither the measurements nor the people attached to them behave as they should. Names become difficult to place. Familiar faces lose their weight in memory. Lives that once occupied rooms, photographs, and conversations begin to leave surprisingly little behind.
And then Eleanor takes her own measurements.
What begins as an impossible discrepancy becomes a quiet race against something far more frightening than death: the possibility of disappearing from the world so completely that no one remembers there was ever anything to lose.
A haunting novel about memory, absence, and the fragile traces we leave in other people’s lives.
