Flap text:- Volume 6: Hammers on Bones by Cassandra Khaw
Cassandra Khaw conquers the genre with hammers on bones, a hard-hitting horror story that Charles Stross describes as "possibly the most promising horror debut of 2016". The book was a finalist for the British Fantasy Award and the Locus Award for Best Novella.
John Persons is a private detective with an unpleasant assignment from an unusual client: a ten-year-old boy hired him to kill his stepfather, McKinsey: an abusive, violent, and vile man.
During his investigations, individuals discover that McKinsey is infested by a foreign presence that is spreading unstoppable. Persons however is the ideal hunter, because he is well acquainted with the occult, and in the course of his own ancient existence has already hunted gods and demons and crushed them between his teeth.
The question is whether he can turn off the stepfather without losing control of his own terrible power.
- Volume 7: A Song for the Silence of Cassandra Khaw
A Song for Silence is a standalone novella from the world of hammers on bones nominated for the British Fantasy Award and the Locus Award and has been described by Kameron Hurley as "a long jump into the bloody, the strange and the fantastic".
Deacon James is a roving blues musician from Georgia, a black man with problems he can't escape, and music that won't let him go.
His world gets out of the joints when he has nightmarish visions of gaping mouths and greedy tentacles on a train ride to Arkham. He meets a madman named John Persons, who claims Deacon is carrying a seed in his head that could destroy the world if he starts germinating.
Person's crazy chatter, Deacon traces all the way to his next gig, where his saxophone music not only rips audiences off their seats, but also summons monstrosities from other dimensions. On the run, Deacon meets a girl who also carries something deep inside, spoiled and dangerous forces. Together they try to escape Arkham, only to encounter the thousand boys already lurking in the woods.
The song in Deacon's head is getting stronger, and soon he won't be able to ignore it anymore.
- Volume 8: Agents from Dreamland by Caitlín R. Kiernan
Agents from Dreamland is a Lovecraft horror novel from the pen of Caitlín R. Kiernan, awarded several times for outstanding works in the horror genre.
A government agent known as the signalman gets off a train on an extreme hot morning in Winslow, Arizona. A little later, he meets up with a woman in a diner to exchange information about an event they both cannot explain.
On a ranch on the shores of the Salton Sea, a sect leader gathers the weak and gullible - the children of the Next Level - and offers them a vision of the future to help them initiate.
One day after the events on the ranch that prompted the signalman to seek help from other sources, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory suddenly loses contact with the interplanetary NASA probe New Horizons.
Something beyond the orbit of Pluto has made contact.
And a woman floating out of time is looking for answers in the future as in the past that can save humanity. - Volume 9: The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle
People move to New York in search of magic, and nothing can convince them that they don't exist.
One of NPR's best books in 2016, winner of the Shirley Jackson Award, the British Fantasy Award, the This is Horror Award for the Novelle of the Year, and finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy and Bram Stoker Award.
Charles Thomas Tester must fight for food on the table and keeps himself afloat with orders from Harlem to Red Hook. He knows the effect a suit exudes that a guitar case can make invisible and what curse is written on his skin that attracts the attention of rich whites and their policemen.
When he delivers an occult book to an ancient sorceress in the heart of Queens, Tom pushes open the door to an unfathomable dimension of magic, attracting the attention of ancient creatures you'd better have left dormant.
A storm that could engulf the whole world brews together over Brookly. Can Black Tom survive long enough to see him break off?
- Volume 10: Wild Widths of S. L. Coney
A boy's life is turned upside down by the arrival of his grandfather, who hides a terrible secret in this sultry Southern horror - perfect for fans of Cassandra Khaw and John Langan.
Nominated for the 2024 Philip K. Dick Award.
In the Esquire selection Best of Horror 2023.An eleven-year-old boy leads an idyllic life in the coastal plains of South Carolina, along with his dog Teach and his parents. But one day the boy's scary and estranged grandfather appears without warning. The idyll gets cracks when hidden secrets are revealed that his parents do not want to explain.
The longer the grandfather stays and the greater the tensions between the adults become, the more the boy feels something change in him - physically - and he becomes something that his grandfather welcomes but his mother fears. Something abysmal. Something monstrous.
Wilde Weiten is an ominous yet sensual coming-of-age debut in the style of Robert R. McCammon's Boy's Life, in which the toxic nature of family secrets takes on eerie dimensions.
