About this Item
49.5x59 cm. Hand-colored print in excellent condition, with pinhole damage at corners and one small tear in top edge. Some areas in full original hand color. This is a wonderful, famous print, made by Magnus in three different states to commemorate the laying of the Trans-Atlantic Telegraph Cable. McKinstry (Charles Magnus, Lithographer) illustrates a different state (names on maps differ, messages from President and Queen transposed, etc.) at page 46. McKinstry, p.45: "Magnus made a point of creating products that would appeal to indiiduals on both sides of the Atlantic. For instance, in 1858, he issued three variations of a large print, Telegraph Chart, America & Europe, to mark the completion of the laying of the Atlantic Cable." (The McKinstry title differs from the title here as the state illustrated does not have the title which runs in the bottom margin of this issue.) Peters (America on Stone) p. 270 devotes two paragraphs to this print: "It celebrates the completion of the laying and opening of the cable. Here we have it all . As can be seen, it shows maps, charts, Trinity Bay and Valentia Bay, the President's Message to the Queen and the Queen's Message to the President, the ship that laid the cable and a chart to advise what the time was everywhere - all ready to be mailed in an envelope for 25c. What more could any one ask from lithography, or any other art? Here we find one of the rare things that Currier & Ives overlooked. There was another interesting lithograph of the occasion by Kimmel & Foster ., but the Magnus one is far more interesting and records no end of detail." A slight variant of this state (small addition on the present copy of text above the American flag) is illustrated in America on Stone as Plate 95. Seller Inventory # p00166
