The original edition of Dr Arnold s Collection of Cathedral Music, was published by subscription, in four volumes folio, dedicated to the King, at the close of the year 1790 [see Part I of this catalogue, item 15] … Alas! it does not appear, from the list appended to the work, that more than one hundred and twenty copies were subscribed for. Nevertheless, in the course of time, the work has obtained a celebrity, which from its extreme utility it so amply merits. The great scarcity, and consequent high price, of copies at the present time, together with the increasing demand for this species of Music, seemed a sufficient reason for a New Edition (Preface). Three vols, folio (439 × 315 mm), pp. [10], 288; [6], 285, [1]; [6], 306, [2], with title-pages printed in red and black, prelims in letterpress, music engraved; some very light, unobtrusive spotting; contemporary reversed calf (extremities worn), polished red spine labels lettered gilt; ownership inscription to front free endpaper of vol.
