A love letter to and descriptive tour of the famous Woolworth Building, also known as "The Cathedral of Commerce," in New York. The Woolworth Building was commissioned by American entrepreneur Frank W. Woolworth as a headquarters for his "five-and-ten-cent" store, the F. W. Woolworth Company. The building was designed by American architect Cass Gilbert in the Neo-Gothic style. Construction for the Woolworth Building began in 1910 and was completed in 1912. The Building officially opened to the public in 1913. It held the designation of being the tallest building in the world (at 792 feet) from 1913-1929. Woolworth gained much revenue from renting out office spaces in the towering skyscraper to commercial tenants. Over the years, the Woolworth Building's tenants included Columbia Records, major railroad companies, the New York City Police Department, the New York City Law Department, Fordham University schools, and various retailers, among others. In the 2010s, the Woolworth Building notably moved away from renting out only to commercial companies and became a mixed-use space with business and residential suites. This pamphlet briefly describes the history of the Woolworth Building's construction, descriptions of the Woolworth Building's many exterior and interior architectural and design elements (such as its terra cotta facade and illumination on its roof), practical features such as the power plant and boiler room, state-of-the-art safety features for its elevators, and some biographical information about Frank W. Woolworth.…
