Hartman von Sjidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) verbindet die frühchristliche Symbolik des Fisches, Ichthys, mit einer neue Wege gehenden Gebäudekonstruktion aus Glas, Holz und Beton. Eine gläserne, zweischalige Außenhaut umhüllt das Gebäude, dabei filtert eine keramische Diffusorschicht Licht und Wärme. Das hölzerne Dachgewölbe im Kircheninneren erstreckt sich 40 Meter in die Höhe und erinnert an ein Boot, die gewaltige Kuppel lässt einen Okulus zum Himmel frei. Strahlenförmige Gänge führen auf den quadratischen Altar zu. Für das einzigartige Omega-Fenster hinter dem Altar wurde eigens eine neue Technik entwickelt: Das romanische Christusrelief aus dem Tympanon des Mittelportals der Kathedrale von Chartres wurde digital rekonstruiert und per Laser 18 Meter groß als Pixelbild in Aluminium perforiert. 94 000 Lichtpunkte lassen im Kircheninneren das Bild des Pantokrators aufscheinen.

The Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, completed in 2008, examines the meaning of a cathedral at the dawn of the third millennium and its implications for sacred space and architectural form. Designed by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP , it combines ancient geometries drawn from nature and early Christian metaphors with the most contemporary methods of computational design to create a luminous, welcoming structure for its multicultural, Pacific Rim city. Since its completion, the Cathedral of Christ the Light has attracted international acclaim for its architecture, its relationship between urban and natural ecologies, and the reimagining of sacred space for contemporary society. The architecture is a study in light. The Christian symbol of the fish is embedded in its geometries and its innovative structure of glass, wood, and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior envelops the building, while a veil of fritted glass diffuses light and solar heat. Inside, an oculus in the forty-meter-high vaulted wooden ceiling opens the space to the sky. The aisles, like rays, lead to the rectangular altar. The unique omega window behind the altar was created using a new technology developed specifically for the cathedral: a Romanesque relief from the tympanum of Chartres Cathedral was digitized, after which a laser was used to perforate aluminum panels, rendering an eighteen-meter-tall pixilated image of Christ that is visible only through natural light. Two overlapping circles, known as a mandorla, form the basis of the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, which was completed in 2008. The design, by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), combines the early Christian symbol of the fish-ichthys-with an innovative structure made of glass, wood, and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior envelops the building, while a layer of fritted glass diffuses light and heat. Inside, the vaulted wooden ceiling soars forty meters upward and is reminiscent of a boat, while an oculus in the enormous dome opens up to the sky. Aisles are like rays leading to the rectangular altar. The unique Omega window behind the altar was created with the help of new technology developed specifically for the cathedral: an image of the Romanesque relief of Christ from the tympanum of Chartres Cathedral was digitized, after which a laser was used to perforate holes in an aluminum panel, rendering an eighteen-meter-tall pixilated image. The image of the Pantocrator is visible as 94,000 points of light inside the cathedral.
