Octavo. In 4 volumes. Vol. 1 Matthew, 990p. Vol. 2 Mark, 349p; Vol. 3 Luke, 794p.; Vol. 4 John 631p. The Catena Aurea (or the Golden Chain) was a rich chain of patristic quotations on virtually every verse of the four gospels. Like Augustine, he had the highest regard for the Church Fathers though he did not equate them as being equal to Holy Scripture. The Catena had been requested by Pope Urban IV. Since he strung the Scriptures together as beads on a necklace, he called them "the golden chain". The English Translation was prepared by Cardinal John Henry Newman who believed this would be a set families could read and understand both the Bible and the full meaning of early Catholic theology. In short, these 2500 pages became the best guide to how the Angelic Doctor was able to quote over eighty of the great fathers of the Church in understanding the gospels. Bound in la blue-gray cloth, spine lettering gilt. A fine set in near fine dark blue dust jackets lettered and decorated in yellow, light crease to front bottom corner of volume 3. Very nice.
