This publication is the 1983 Second Edition of the Revised Volume I: Introduction (1950-1971). The Newark Museum's Tibetan collection is one of the foremost holdings of such material in the world. Political events of the last twenty-two years have caused the disruption of traditional Tibetan culture, making the Museum's collection even more valuable as a record of a civilization now vastly altered. The unique nature of the collection is that this record is so complete. It includes objects of everyday life as well as painting, sculpture and ritual material. The Museum is proud that it has not only amassed this collection but that it also has consistently supported related research and publication. The Museum has had two visits by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, in 1979 and 1981. The Tibetan collection also received the recognition of a national tour of three hundred selected objects, Tibet, A Lost World, sponsored by the American Federation of Arts in 1978-80. Prior to that, in 1976-77, many of the collection's finest pieces travelled to Paris and Munich as part of a major international loan show. The first edition of the five-volume Catalogue of The Newark museum Tibetan Collection, produced between 1950 and 1971, was the work of then curator Eleanor Olson This publication of the revised edition of volume I is evidence of the Museum's continued commitment to this great assembly of art and ethnography. Contents in Seven Chapters: Geography, History, Religion, Society, Architecture, The Newark Museum Collection, and Symbols. Photographic illustrations on almost all pages. Seller Inventory # 17697
