This catalogue showcases the museum's unrivalled collection, which includes significant paintings such as Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop?s Grounds, Dedham Mill, and The Cottage in a Cornfield. Accompanying these are masterful full-scale sketches for The Hay Wain and The Leaping Horse, as well as an impressive selection of oil sketches, drawings, and sketchbooks. With contributions from benefactors like John Sheepshanks, Miss Isabel Constable, and Henry Vaughan, the collection illustrates Constable?s unique approach to capturing the English countryside, blending authentic representation with romantic sentiment. This catalogue, authored by Graham Reynolds, presents a comprehensive analysis of the Constable Collection, detailing each piece in relation to Constable?s life and other notable collections. It reflects on his deep connection to the Constable country?the Stour Valley near Flatford, Dedham, and East Bergholt?and elucidates the careful progression by which he achieved his artistic stature. The text acknowledges the contributions of numerous scholars and colleagues, underscoring the collaborative efforts that have shaped this catalogue. Notably, it pays homage to the knowledge and support offered by specialists, including Mr. Jonathan Mayne and Mr. Martin Davies.Through thorough discussion, Catalogue of the Constable Collection serves not only as a resource for understanding Constable's works but also as a tribute to the man who immortalised the landscapes of his homeland.
