Add to basketDate approximate (undated). From the Foreword: George Albert Seaman has made another most valuable contribution to Virgin Islands cultural history. He has collected folk proverbs to which he has added his inimitably sensitive interpretations. These so-called "native" proverbs are significant, not only for their usage and meanings or applications, but, in this period of eager searchings for identity and heritage, they convey something about linguistics of a people that is as important and unmistakable as are fingerprints to the individual. This collection takes one into the fascinating world of dialects, patois, Creoles and their phonetics with variable orthography. In 1967 Mr. Seaman published his first treasury entitled The Virgin Islands Dictionary. It was his version of characterise tic words and phrases as they are used in St. Croix. The edition was completely sold out and an enlarged revision was issued in 1968. The Caribbean is a rich and practically an unexplored field for such investigations; indeed, not only in the field of linguistics, but it is prolific also in the many facets of archaeology, anthropology, sociology, natural sciences, and in much, much more. What George Seaman has contributed is a surfeit from this wealth and his own unique version of interpreting these axioms. It is also characteristic that each island's usage varies from the others within the area even as there is variety within the language groups; that is to say, that there is regional difference of expression within each language, in each national group. Few Crucians would be as qualified as Seaman to publish this treasury of native lore for he is a native who has the facility of easy social mobility among all levels of the island life. 64 pages.

We generally ship by the next business day. We want your order to reach you in the same condition it leaves our shelves -- so much so that we've created our own brand of shipping mailer. CorgiPack¿ mailers are constructed with a B-flute corrugated fiberboard pad providing solid edge and corner protection in transit, protection sadly lacking in cheap bubble mailers. And they're 100% recyclable -- just put them out with the household paper! International orders are shipped via AIR and should arrive in 7 to 10 days after shipping. Oversize items (e.g. sets containing 2 or more volumes, 4to, folios) and high cost items are sometimes subject to additional shipping charges; we will contact you for your approval if such is the case. Orders shipped outside of the United States may be subject to import taxes, customs duties and fees levied by the destination country. International shipments may be subject to such import taxes, customs duties and fees, which are levied once a shipment reaches the recipient's country. Additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by the recipient; we have no control over these charges and can't predict what they may be. Customs policies vary widely from country to country; you should contact your local customs office for more information. When customs clearance procedures are required, it can cause delays beyond our original delivery estimates.
