Published in 2004 but remarkably prescient, this book tackles a problem that has only intensified: the disconnect between work and dignity. Through vivid real-world examples and rigorous analysis, Waltman demonstrates that poverty persists not because people refuse to work, but because wages have become catastrophically disconnected from living costs. He grounds his argument in three distinct frameworks: civic republican theory, which emphasizes that economic inequality undermines democratic participation; religious traditions from medieval just-wage doctrine to contemporary Christian social teaching; and practical economic evidence.
What sets this book apart is its refusal to treat the living wage as merely an economic question. Waltman shows how work provides essential structure, identity, and civic participation—benefits that extend far beyond the paycheck. He examines why the living wage outperforms alternative anti-poverty approaches, including economic growth strategies, basic income guarantees, and the Earned Income Tax Credit, each of which has significant limitations.
The book's most valuable contribution may be its candid treatment of objections. Rather than dismissing concerns about unemployment, inflation, and business failures, Waltman addresses them head-on, explaining why standard economic models often fail to account for how higher wages can drive efficiency gains, increase consumer spending, and improve worker productivity. His analysis of why the textbook supply-and-demand model produces misleading predictions about employment effects remains particularly relevant as policymakers continue to misunderstand these dynamics.
Drawing on evidence from both the United States and Great Britain, Waltman also documents something striking: ordinary people already support a living wage. Public opinion polling reveals that Americans and Britons, despite their different political traditions, share a fundamental belief that work should provide dignity and security. Yet politicians have failed to translate this consensus into policy.
For readers concerned about inequality, poverty, or the future of work in an era of stagnant wages and precarious employment, this book offers both intellectual rigor and practical wisdom. Whether you're an economist, policymaker, activist, or simply someone troubled by the gap between how hard people work and how little they earn, The Case for the Living Wage provides the tools to understand why this issue matters and what we might do about it. Nearly two decades after publication, its arguments have only grown more timely.
