About this Item
This, Gardner's seventh Perry Mason adventure, is surely one of the wildest -- and for some reason one of the hardest to find in a jacket. (Please note this jacketed example is an early Grosset & Dunlap reprint -- NOT a Morrow true first.) Cranberry topstain. Those who know Mason only from Raymond Burr's rather sedentary TV incarnation may be left breathless by the kind of hyperactive, barely (if at all) within-the-law rampaging around town the trial lawyer, his lovestruck secretary, and their private dick get up to, here. Of course, it helps the frantic pace that no one seems to have paid a lot of attention to hanging around waiting for "search warrants" or reading the suspect his "Miranda rights" back in 1935. (Copyright page here states "Second printing, November, 1935," but we suspect that may be picked up from the original Morrow plates -- whether this G&D reprint actually dates from '35 or '36 in unclear. Pencil note to margin of first text page reads "Nope" ("Hope"?) "you'll like this -- S.S.L. Dec. 1 '36, / En route to Tulsa.") But who is actually Perry's client -- the caretaker, or the cat? Is there more than one big Persian cat? Is it possible for a Perry Mason client to become a murder VICTIM? For Perry Mason to be called up from the defense table to testify as a PROSECUTION WITNESS? Jacket complete with original 75-cent price showing, though "fair" with considerable chipping to most edges, including a one-inch triangular chip to top edge of jacket rear panel. Gail Patrick Jackson's CBS television series (1957-1966) of course starred Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale, Hedda Hopper's son William, Bill Talman and Ray Collins, the theme music Fred Steiner's "Park Avenue Beat." 309 pp. followed by 5 pp. publisher's ads, including for six Perry Masons through "Counterfeit Eye," seven Agatha Christies through "Murder in the Calais Coach" (1934), and three Dashiell Hammett's through "The Glass Key." Here reduced from $150. Seller Inventory # 010175
