‘. . . guides you through the glories and abominations of bella Italia’: Anna del Conte, award-winning doyenne of Italian food writers.
CASA NOSTRA is about an Italy that other books simply don't know or care about. Part commentary, part travel book, endlessly illuminating, it looks at issues and themes that make Italy such a very different country … seductive on one hand, perverse or unsettling on the other.
This is not another glorification of buying and renovating an ancient Tuscan farmhouse. Rather it is a fascinating personal collection of stories, comments, legends, descriptions and anecdotes collected first hand as pathways to discover Italian reality.
Roger’s views range from Renaissance painters and paintings, WWII partisans and local politics to fish festas for thousands, secretive fungi hunters and fighting wild boar for his vegetable crops. Exploring the depths of the Catholic church, the heights of opera festivals and the convolutions of the justice system that tried Amanda Knox, explaining the truth about Italian fathers (and godfathers), unravelling the importance of la bella figura and the final arrivederci to Silvio Berlusconi, this book helps to explain why such a contradictory country populated by such contradictory people is so eternally inspiring and heart-warming.
Roger Jupe has visited Italy for over 40 years and played a key role in making pasta one of Britain’s favourite foods in the latter part of the 20th century. 15 years ago he bought a house with his artist wife Val Archer on the Tuscan/Umbrian border and immediately began to record the daily lives and memories of their new friends and neighbours, adding these to his previous decades of observation.
His discoveries and his considered views make CASA NOSTRA an essential read for anyone who loves Italian food and the Italian way of life but who also wants to know very much more about authentic Italy and real Italians.

Store description
In 2002, World of Books Group was founded on an ethos to do good, protect the planet and support charities by enabling more goods to be reused. Since then, we've grown into to a global company pioneering the circular economy. Today, we drive the circular economy through three re-commerce brands: - Wob: Through Wob, we sell. We provide affordable, preloved books and media to customers all over the world. A book leaves our collection of over seven million titles and begins a new chapter every two seconds, enabling more goods to be reused. - Ziffit: Through Ziffit, we buy. We give people around the world the opportunity to contribute to the circular economy, earn money and protect the planet, by trading their unwanted books and media. - Shopiago: Through Shopiago, we help others. By sharing the technology that has grown World of Books Group into the business it is today, we’re helping charities increase revenue and reduce waste through re-commerce.…
