Synopsis:

Guatemala, land of the Mayas, produced one of the richest colonial expressions in the world during the Spanish Empire. This richness is seen in its domestic architecture, constructed by the native heirs of Tikal and creators of the most beautiful textiles of tropical America. This book is a journey through the interiors of the best houses in Guatemala and the rebuilt city of Antigua, where decoration combines pre-hispanic axes, colonial wood carvings and regional handicrafts into the surroundings of a cosmopolitan city, a ranch in the country, a weekend house on the Pacific Ocean, and more.

About the Authors:

Katia Niesiolowska practiced as an interior designer in Guatemala for 20 years including projects published in the Villegas Casa series (Casa Gualmalteca, Casa Republicana, and Casa Moderna). With Ange A. Bourda and Villegas editores for two years she developed the Casa Guatemalteca project as an editor, selecting from all the site information and material she collected during her years of working around Guatemala City and other locations in her native country.

Ange Bourda, the French photographer, did his professional studies in France and Spain. Founder of several photographic studios and publicity agencies, member of the Professional Photographers of America, Inc., he has done experimental theater with a mixture of cinema and photography. Winner of the First International Prize for Professional Photography in Peubla, Mexico, and the First National Prize for Quality in Spain, he has participated in a number of book projects and his photographs have appeared in such magazines as World Architecture.

Jorge Luján Muñoz is a Guatemalan historian from the Universidad de San Carlos, a charter member of the Guatemalan Academy of Geography and History, a retired Professor of the same University and holder of the J. Joaquín Pardo Chair of the History Department of the Universidad del Valle of Guatemala.

A daughter of European parents, Katia Niesiolowska grew up in Lima, Peru and went to university in Munich, Germany. She has worked in diverse fields: from fashion in Spain to banking in London to Real Estate in New York. In the early 1980s, she moved to Guatemala and devoted herself to making furniture and crafts for her own decoration business. House of Guatemala is her first book.
