Print on Demand. This book is a fascinating collection of medieval necrologies—registers of the dead—from the Cathedral of Chartres in France. Dating from the 13th to the 17th centuries, these documents offer an extraordinary glimpse into the lives and deaths of the cathedral's community over more than 400 years. The necrologies provide a rich source of information about the individuals who lived and worked at Chartres, from bishops and canons to chaplains, servants, and lay benefactors. More than just a record of names and dates, the necrologies also offer insights into the beliefs and values of medieval people. They document the importance of prayers for the dead, the cult of saints, and the role of the church in society. Through these necrologies, the author reconstructs the human and spiritual world of the Cathedral of Chartres, shedding new light on the social, religious, and intellectual life of the Middle Ages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …
