Paperback. The relay beacons went dark three weeks ago. No distress signal. No debris. No explanation. Dr. Kael Voss - historian, exile, the only person known to have survived direct contact with an Archive shard and retained a coherent mind - is recalled from the galaxy's edge to find out why. His orders are simple. His crew is not. His military escort, Commander Yara Osin, thinks historians are liabilities. His navigator has started humming songs in a language that doesn't exist. And someone - something - inside the ancient Crystal Archive orbiting the dying star ahead has been counting down to their arrival since before they launched. The Archive is the galaxy's memory: twelve thousand years of civilizational data compressed into a megastructure the size of a moon. It has never responded to anything. Until now. The first shard the crew recovers shows an entire civilization - a space-faring culture called the Kethani, who occupied this sector, who built stations and flew ships and left debris trails still cooling in the void - that does not exist. No records. No ruins. No graves. Only a resonance ghost in the crystal, whispering that they were here.History is being rewritten. The author is waiting inside. And it knows Voss's name. What do you do when the universe's memory begins to forget on purpose? This item is printed on demand. The Archive is the galaxy's memory: twelve thousand years of civilizational data compressed into a megastructure the size of a moon. It has never responded to anything. Until now. The first shard the crew recovers shows an entire civilization — a space-faring culture called the Kethani, who occupied this sector, who built stations and flew ships and left debris trails still cooling in the void — that does not exist. History is being rewritten. The author is waiting inside. And it knows Voss's name.
