So many pages have been written about Carlota and Maximilian that they would be enough to cover every wall of Chapultepec Castle. What more is left to say, then? This novel doesn't attempt to revive the Mexican Empire with reliable data or heroes dusted with glory. What is offered here is something else: a hallucinatory testimony narrated by a courtesan who has lost her mind, and who from that murky margin reconstructs the elusive figure of Empress Carlota. A madwoman narrating to another madwoman. Nor is this a historical novel in the conventional sense. José Luis Trueba doesn't seek to reconstruct History, but rather to delve into its silences, invent its cracks, dramatize what is insinuated among rumors. With the lucidity of madness, this novel dares to say what no one could see. Here, the truth is merely a backdrop.
