PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED in full color photography with many full or double-page. From the author: "I have called this book "Caribou and the barren-lands,'"although strictly speaking the term "barren-lands" refers to only part of thecaribou's range: the rocky, lake-strewn tundra of the Northwest Territories. Yet to most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth. the northern wilderness is barren only to those lacking in perception and imagination. But if we should let the great herds vanish from the barren-lands, they will indeed become what the name implies, and we will have lost a part of the majesty and mystery of life. I hope that through "Caribou and the barren-lands" others can learn about the northern lands as I did-by following the caribou." 176 pages. NOTE: Due to large size of the book significant additional shipping will be required for expedited and out-of-U.S. shipment. GA2.

This is the story of the great herds of barren-ground caribou and their yearly migrations through northern Canada and Alaska.
To follow the caribou is to experience every facet of the northern environment, for the caribou are the central creatures of the North, the pulse of life in the land.
Spring, calving, summer, autumn and winter: a chapter is devoted to each one, and so the story of the caribou is told. Maps, a couple-hundred photos and captivating, informative text provide you with the most intimate story about this beautiful, thriving animal.
A wildlife biologist with a Ph.D. in Zoology for the University of British Columbia, George Calef complements his scientific expertise with photographic genius. His photographic and writing credits include such eminent national and international nature and wildlife magazines as "Arctic in Color", "Audubon", "International Wildlife", "National Geographic", "Nature Canada", "Owl", and "The Living Wilderness".
