# Broché : 373 pages # Parution : 1988 # Description Two workshops on Cardiovascular Dynamics and Models were held in Bethesda in Sept 1985 in the Biomedical Engineering and Instrumentation Branch (BEIB) of the Division of research Services (DRS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and in Sept 1987 in Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, Unit 141, Hôpital Lariboisière, Paris France. The primary objective of the first workshop was to collect and exchange information about différent works performed in the contributing laboratories, and to develop and update projects for future collaborative work. The second workshop, two years later, was devoted to those collaborative projects that showed significant advancement and brought clinical measurements, experimental measurements, and mathematical models into close association. The INSERM-NIH workshops discussed three subjects of importance in cardiovascular diseases. One concerned the distribution of coronary blood flow ans some of the factors that regulate it and are responsible for an inadequate supply of blood to certain regions of heart. Physiologic studies have provided some understanding of the mechanism of subendocardial muscle are not yet available. There mathematical models of the ventricular muscle are invoked to help explain the increased risk of ischemia in subendocardial muscle, and to determine what information needs to be obtained experimentally. This models thus go beyond mere description to provide effective direction for new experimental efforts. Modeling of ventricular wall mechanics is also of crucial importance to understanding how the ventricules function i health and desease Now that echocardiographic and other imaging techniques are available for humans, cardiologis need guidance in deciding what variables should be measured and how the should be evaluated. The third subject discussed concerned estimation of the distensibility of arteries and ofperipheral resistance from non-invasive measurements. This problem - a classical problem in physiology and hydrodynamics - is important for several reasons. Thus vascular studies throw light on changes as diverse as coronary atherroma and lrft ventriculardhypertrophy, and both of these offect coronary blood flow which in turn affects ventricular function. Physiological experiments that interact with modelling studies in these fileds offer promise of improved understanding of theses causes of desease and of more effiient planning of experiments the will help to solve the important problems of cardiovascular desease.…
