Fourth Edition. Frontis-piece portrait, 89pp, bound in red cloth, binding tight, additional interior illustrations, ex-library. With the signature of James Augustus Healy, dated 1890, written on the front free endpaper. James Augustus Healy (1830-1900), was the first African American Roman Catholic Bishop. He presided over a diocese covering Maine and New Hampshire for 25 years. After ordination Father Healy was assigned to Bishop John Fitzpatrick's Boston Diocese, and finally became pastor of St. James Church in Boston. He was 45 years old when his appointment came to be the second Bishop of Portland, Maine. Because he was half Irish he bonded with the parishioners on Munjoy Hill, many of whom were recent arrivals from Ireland. He spoke fluent French, which endeared him to the Acadians of Northern Maine. Covers soiled, with spine label taped on. Interior shows ink stamped ownership for St. Joseph's Convent inside the front cover, library pocket in back, with an interior taped hinge.…
