About this Item
DESCRIPTION: The 1927 limited edition of "Candide" by Voltaire, featuring etchings by Clara Tice (1888-1973), is a notable collector's item. The inclusion of Clara Tice's etchings adds a unique and collectible aspect to this edition, making it a sought-after item for collectors and enthusiasts of both literature and art. This edition is a fine example of early 20th-century book art, combining literary significance with artistic and printing craftsmanship. The translation is an exact reprint of the earliest English text of "Candide," which was originally written in French by François-Marie Arouet, known more commonly as Voltaire. Illustrations by Clara Tice: The book is adorned with 10 hand-colored erotic etchings by Clara Tice, an American artist. These illustrations, including a frontispiece, are produced on watermarked laid paper and are protected with tissue guards, each lettered in red. Copies numbered 1 to 250 are printed on a special deckle-edge Pannekoek paper, while copies numbered 251 to 1,000 are printed on papier à la cuve. The specific copy referred here to is number 296. Binding and Size: The book is bound in a quarter black buckram over wrinkled faux-marbled paper painted with gilt. Page Layout and Collation: 182 pp, plus 10 plates with tissue guards, including the frontispiece. Publishing and Printing Details: The book was printed in Holland by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, a printing house founded in Haarlem in 1703, and published by The Bennett Libraries Inc., New York. The Bennett Libraries in New York acted as the publisher, and Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem were the printers. CONDTION: Book is in near fine condition, strong joints and hinges and clean un-marked pages.
