Check for $50.16 drawn on Lynn Safe Deposit & Trust Company of Lynn, Massachusetts by Miss Helen Giddings and payable to Jesephine Ruffin. Endorsed clearly on back by "Josephine Ruffin Boston. Ruffin, an African American, was an abolitionist, civil rights activist and suffragist. She founded the New Era Club in 1894 and also began in that same year publishing Woman's Era, the first newpaper published by an African American woman which was published in Boston between 1894 and 1897. We don't know anything about Miss Helen Giddings or exaxtly why Giddings wrote this check to Ruffin.

We started our business in 1971 as mail-order specialists on Africa and African-Americana. We soon expanded to include material on Asia and the Middle East. We also purchase antiquarian and rare books and libraries in all fields. A suite of offices at 2348 Whitney Avenue is open by appointment and contains 15,000 volumes. Easily accessible from I-91 or the Wilbur Cross Parkway. Catalogs are issued occasionally on listed specialties.
