The Dosage Calculation Reference Built for Canadian Nursing Practice
Canadian nursing students enter a pharmaceutical and regulatory environment shaped by its own drug nomenclature, Health Canada approved formulations, and institutional protocols that general dosage texts cannot fully address. This textbook bridges that gap, teaching every major calculation method, including ratio-proportion, dimensional analysis, weight-based, and BSA dosing, within the clinical context of Canadian drug orders, metric conventions, and formulary-specific concentrations. The approach is integrated and sequential: each skill builds from the one before it, and every numerical result is anchored to a clinical safety verification before any medication reaches the patient.
Nurses who internalize these methods carry a structured decision process, not a formula memorized under pressure, into every medication encounter.
What This Textbook Builds:
- Metric conversion and Canadian drug order interpretation - the ability to read, decode, and verify any medication order against the supplied formulation before calculating
- Ratio-proportion calculation applied across oral solids, liquids, reconstitution, and parenteral preparations - precision dose preparation across every common administration route
- IV flow rate programming for both gravity infusion and electronic pump - safe infusion setup from the ordered rate through drip-chamber verification
- Continuous infusion titration and dose-rate conversion - clinical competency for managing infusion adjustments at the bedside in real time
- Pediatric weight-based and BSA dosing alongside geriatric renal adjustment - accurate individualized dosing across the full patient lifespan
- Insulin, anticoagulation, and critical care vasoactive infusion calculations - a structured safe-dose approach to every high-alert medication class encountered in Canadian acute care
- The Canadian Safe-Dose Verification System - a cross-referenced atlas linking every calculation category to its safety anchor, designed for rapid point-of-care verification
Open this textbook at any chapter and come away with both the calculation method and the clinical judgment required to use it safely.
