The Canadian Clinical Reference Built for Personal Support Workers - at the Point of Care
Canadian Handbook for the Support Worker 2026-2027 is a compact clinical reference aligned with national NACC competency standards and Canadian regulatory requirements across long-term care, home care, and community settings. Where other support worker texts summarize tasks, this handbook teaches clinical reasoning: each topic defines what to observe, what falls within PSW scope, and when a finding demands immediate escalation. Written for PSW students preparing for certification and working support workers who need precise guidance at the point of care, the content reflects the regulatory landscape of every Canadian province.
Every major topic includes a Care Direction - the clinical decision anchor a PSW needs to act correctly and confidently under pressure.
Built Into Every Chapter:
• Scope of practice across Canadian provinces - delegated acts, regulatory boundaries, and the distinction between PSW observation and independent action
• Clinical observation for urgent reporting: skin color, breathing effort, behavior change, and cognitive status flags - and when each triggers escalation
• Safe mobility and transfers for frail, cognitively impaired, and medically complex clients, including equipment use and pressure injury prevention
• Dementia and mental health care: responsive behavior strategies, communication approaches, and dignity-preserving support across stages of cognitive decline
• Palliative and end-of-life care: comfort-focused support, advance directive principles, and communication with dying clients and families
• SBAR-structured reporting and documentation: verbal handoffs, care plan entries, and incident reports that capture what was observed and when
• Infection prevention in LTC and home care: hand hygiene, PPE selection, isolation protocols, and outbreak response procedures
• The Canadian Care Decision Compass Master Atlas: every Care Direction from every chapter indexed by situation type and care setting
Reach for this handbook when it matters most - in the moment of clinical uncertainty, on a difficult shift, or when a client's safety depends on the right answer quickly.
