Stackpole Company, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania [Published date: 1963]. Hardcover, xxv, 238 pp; illustrated with black-and-white maps and diagrams; 20 cm. Sixth (Revised) printing, February 1963. Series: Military Classics. In good condition, without dust jacket. Red cloth boards with black titling on front and spine; minor rubbing to spine ends and corners, light scuffing, and slight edgewear. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Illustrated endpapers feature a detailed map of Gaul at the time of Caesar. Originally published in 1947 by The Military Service Publishing Company, this modern military analysis of Julius Caesar's De Bello Gallico was written by Lt. Col. S. G. Brady, U.S.A. (Ret.). It offers a professional soldier's perspective on Caesar's campaigns in Gaul from 58 to 51 B.C., correlating ancient strategy and tactics with modern battlefield principles. The volume includes twenty-three chapters tracing Caesar's conquests from the Helvetian invasion and battles against the Belgae and Germans to the decisive sieges of Avaricum and Alesia, followed by appendices on the organization of the Roman army and the art of war in Caesar's time. Maps and campaign diagrams clarify troop movements, terrain, and logistics. [From Foreword by Robert Hammond Murray] "His military campaigns have evoked the admiration of masters of the art of war. His essential qualities were those of a man of action, clearness of vision, promptness of decision, energy in execution, and indefatigable perseverance." Contents: Chronological Outline of Caesar's Life; Foreword by Robert Hammond Murray; The Helvetian Invasion; The Battle of Bibracte; Campaign Against the Germans; First Campaign Against the Belgae; Battle With the Nervii on the Sabis River; Conquest of the Atuatuci: The First Two Years; The Work of Caesar's Subordinates; Campaigns Against the Maritime Tribes; More Trouble With Germans; First and Second Expeditions to Invade Britain; Ambiorix Rides the Crest; Ambiorix Commences to Wonder; Revolt By the Senones and Treveri; Ambiorix Ceases to Wonder; Ambiorix Ceases; Uprising Under Vercingetorix; The Siege of Avaricum; Operations Against the Revolt of the Aedui; Caesar's Engagement and Attack at Gergovia; Spread of the General Rebellion of the Gauls; The Final Stand at the Siege of Alesia; The Last Conflict With an Army of Gauls; The End of the Struggle; Organization of the Roman Army; The Roman Art of War in Caesar's Time; Index.…
