First edition reprint, 1931-1937, large octavos, 4 volumes, 236, 241, 258, and 318 pp. plus 1,120 text figures and 136 b&w photo plates and 1 folding color plate. In green cloth (original?) with gilt lettered spine titles. Britton and Rose's great work on the Cactaceae was first published in four volumes by the Carnegie Institution beginning with the first volume in 1919 and ending with the final volume in 1923. It was for many years the most comprehensive treatise on the cacti with emphasis on North American species and is an essential reference work for cactophiles. The Cactus and Succulent Society reprint predates the Abbey Press and Dover reprints and appears to be the scarcest of the reprints with the original Carnegie first edition being rare. It also has value as being one of the earliest publication projects undertaken by the Society. *** Condition: Complete with all illustrations. Externally, the volumes show light shelfwear and scuffing; gilt titles fading. All bindings tight with hinges sound. Internally clean and unmarked. NOT an ex-library set and desirable as such.
