About this Item
Original bandanna/foulard. 43 x 47.5 cm., b&w photo silkscreened in black on white cotton. N.p. [Paris], n.p., n.d., May or June 1968. £1, 200 Crisp condition. Very rare, I have seen no others in the several hundred printed items that I have handled and the hundreds more that I have encountered from say 2008 on. The few good books that I know on artifacts from the period concentrate on the largely quite common posters silkscreened on paper, situ ephemera, communications, printed photos, journals and graffiti. A very atmospheric image, by an unknown photographer, taken from behind ?enemy' lines that depicts the CRS (riot squad in this context) mustering on or blocking rue de l'ancienne Comédie. The bandanna is an indispensable part of the street fighting wo/man's costume, for anonymity, gaz lacrymogene and of course a ?Viva Zapata' like style (replaced in the ?70s by the radical Middle Eastern chic of the keffiyeh).
