Discover the extraordinary Crocodile Monitor, Varanus salvadorii, and learn what responsible management of one of the world’s most impressive monitor lizards truly requires.
CROCODILE MONITOR HANDBOOK is a comprehensive guide to Crocodile Monitor care, enclosure setup, feeding, behavior, health, training, enrichment, handling considerations, safety, and responsible ownership. Written for prospective keepers, experienced reptile enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by large monitor lizards, Raphael Hartley provides practical information while emphasizing welfare, preparation, and risk management.
Native to New Guinea, the Crocodile Monitor is an intelligent, highly active, predominantly arboreal reptile equipped with powerful jaws, sharp claws, and a long muscular tail. Its size, strength, climbing ability, and defensive capabilities mean it is not a suitable reptile for casual or inexperienced ownership. Successful management requires substantial space, specialized facilities, knowledge, financial preparation, and access to experienced reptile veterinary care.
Inside this handbook, you’ll discover:
• Crocodile Monitor natural history, anatomy, intelligence, behavior, and arboreal adaptations
• Important considerations before acquiring Varanus salvadorii
• How to evaluate healthy, legally and responsibly sourced animals
• Planning secure, spacious enclosures designed around climbing and natural movement
• Guidance on enclosure construction, ventilation, substrate, elevated platforms, hides, branches, and water
• Establishing appropriate basking temperatures, thermal gradients, humidity, lighting, and UVB
• Feeding principles, prey variety, supplementation, feeding schedules, and body-condition management
• Understanding activity patterns, defensive behavior, communication, stress signals, and individual temperament
• Low-stress approaches to routine management and cooperative training
• Why direct handling should be approached cautiously and unnecessary physical restraint avoided
• Enrichment strategies that encourage climbing, exploration, foraging, and problem-solving
• Maintaining hygiene, water quality, enclosure sanitation, and effective biosecurity
• Monitoring appetite, weight, movement, skin, shedding, breathing, droppings, and behavioral changes
• Preventive health care and recognizing signs requiring professional reptile veterinary attention
• Common husbandry-related health concerns and strategies for reducing avoidable risks
• Quarantine procedures for new reptiles and disease prevention in multi-reptile collections
• Safe enclosure access, escape prevention, emergency procedures, and keeper protection
• Preparing for equipment failures, power outages, extreme temperatures, evacuation, and other emergencies
• Long-term financial planning, record keeping, responsible transfer, and lifelong stewardship
Safety is a central theme throughout CROCODILE MONITOR HANDBOOK. These animals should never be treated as oversized versions of smaller pet lizards. Their physical capabilities demand secure infrastructure and management practices that minimize unnecessary direct contact. Training should focus on predictable routines and voluntary cooperation rather than forcing interaction.
Responsible ownership also begins before acquisition. Prospective keepers should investigate local laws, permit requirements, housing restrictions, veterinary availability, adult enclosure needs, and the significant long-term costs associated with maintaining a large monitor.
Whether you are researching Crocodile Monitors before considering ownership, improving your knowledge as an experienced reptile keeper, or simply fascinated by Varanus salvadorii, this handbook provides a valuable foundation for understanding the species.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
