Illustrated by 2 pages of black and white plates, and by 2 figures and 24 tables in text. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Collection of essays on English urban history in the early modern period. They cover Coventry, York, Kentish towns, Salisbury, Chester, Norwich and London. Peter Clark (b.1944), urban historian, was first director of the Centre for Urban History, University of Leicester, 1985-99 and Professor of European Urban History, University of Helsinki, 2000-2011. Professor Paul Slack was a Lecturer in History at the University of York, 1969-73 and later held various offices at the University of Oxford.
