Add to basketQue Corporation, Indianapolis, and compiled and edited Digital Research, Pacific Grove, CA, 1983; 205 x 275mm; pp vi, 354; pictorial cover on white card, very good copy. . . . . . Digital Research, incorporated in 1974 in Monterey, CA, then with the modest prefix "Intergalactic", made a valuable contribution to the developing personal computer scene. Before this there was a plethora of different operating systems, something which DR was able to overcome the diversity and establish a common standard applicable to both the single computer system and networked devices (MP/M, 1979). Directly competitive with the DR CP/M approach was Microsoft, whose MS-DOS was taken up by IBM - and named PC-DOS - for its so-called IBM Personal Computer released in the US in1981. Digital Research continued to produce specialst operating systems but was bought out in 1981 by Novell. . . . . . The catalogue, prepared by Digital Research, lists nearly 2,000 software products, conveniently separated into four different relevant categories - hardware, operating systems, languages and applications - and sometimes further subdivided according to business type or focus. Each entry identifies the relevant company and the program and gives a short but reasonably detailed summary description. There's also a history of Digital Research and several photographs. The catalogue is a useful entry to the diversity of available software at the time and a history of early development.
