Pencil inscription of George Gilbertson on half-title. 5 tables at end, including 3 folding and numerous tables in text. The first part provides a survey of the Lancashire cotton industry in the era of invention and of the cotton trade in general. The second part is a history of the Liverpool cotton market and the Cotton Brokers' Association, which includes Gleanings and reminiscences of the old cotton brokers. Many statistical sources, including the five tables at the end, are used to support the argument. An authoritative survey of the industry until the mid-1880s.
